Brownfield register

The came into force on 16 April 2017. The regulations require Local Planning Authorities to prepare, maintain and publish registers of previously developed (brownfield) land suitable for residential development.

The Register is kept in two parts:

  • Part 1 – a comprehensive list of all brownfield sites in a local authority area that are suitable for housing, irrespective of their planning status.
  • Part 2 – sites which the authority wishes to grant ‘Permission in Principle’ to (in accordance with the )

Detailed guidance on brownfield land registers was published on 28 July 2017 through (NPPG). The format of the brownfield land register is set out in the published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The Brownfield Register for Birmingham includes sites in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA). The Register is based on the annual monitoring for 2019, which has a base date of 1 April 2019. Therefore site information, such as ‘Planning Status’, in the Brownfield Register is correct as of 1 April 2019. The Brownfield Register will be reviewed annually, as required by the regulations.
