Highways Work Programme

Birmingham’s highway network includes 2,500km of road network, nearly 100,000 street lights, 76,000 trees (excluding parks) and over 850 highway structures, such as bridges and subways, across the city.

We are currently investing over £40m in our roads and footways.

How we plan and approve the highway investment work programme

Surveys are carried out on Birmingham’s roads on a rolling schedule to determine their condition.

We use the information we collect on road condition to produce programmes of work to address the needs of those sites identified as being in a poor condition.

The work programmes we produce are then prioritised, the general principle being ‘worst condition first’.

We then consult with elected members and other key stakeholders such as National Highways and Transport for West Midlands where appropriate, regarding the programmes.

You can view the list of current and completed works below. The tables are split into carriageways and footways:

Access during resurfacing works

We hope you understand that we have to maintain the roads, and appreciate your patience and understanding during works.

Any road closures are in place for your safety as well as the safety of our staff. Pedestrian access will be maintained, as well as access for emergency vehicles.

Following resurfacing, vehicles are not able to drive over the new surface while it is hot. The sections of road affected could therefore be entirely closed to all traffic for a few hours whilst the surface cools properly.

Most local access can be arranged if you speak to the staff onsite, who will be stationed by the barriers at the end of road. Do not pass beyond safety barriers unless authorised to do so by our staff on site.

If you require special access, contact 0121 303 6644 and select option 3 to discuss this with us during office hours.
